“Whenever we have a problem, the customer service is always great. We are very grateful to have the support of a partner who is looking out for our business’ best interests.”
Greta Young, Controller
Headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee, Blytheco client Southern Towing is one of the largest transporters of fertilizer and other products via the inland waterways. Southern Towing typically moves hazardous materials, ammonia, farming grains, rocks and other materials not allowed to be transported by truck on land. With a fleet of 23 boats and 71 barges that travel up and down the Mississippi River system and the Gulf Intercoastal Waterway, Southern Towing’s services winds up being less expensive that trucking.
Controller Greta Young’s role has her involved in many of the day-to-day aspects of the company. When she first arrived, the team didn’t have an effective records keeping system in place; they were using a DOS system for accounting and data management. “We also used a lot of Excel spreadsheets and email. It was very cumbersome and highly ineffective. Our team members who were tasked with making critical decisions for the company didn’t have easy access to the information they needed.”
Greta knew there was a better way to manage their critical data that would make them more efficient and profitable. At her previous company, she worked with Sage 100 so she embarked on a process to update Southern Towing’s business technology. She connected with Blytheco who assisted with implementing Sage 100 and customizing the system to suit their unique needs.By collaborating with Blytheco Business Account Manager Kelly Rayburn, Greta was able to greatly improve workflow across the company while keeping staff head count down. For example, they have EZ Content Manager from ACOM integrated into their ERP; it allows them to organize purchases and easily pass documents interdepartmentally and present customers and vendors with digitally signed documents. It also allows managers to track order status and all the key information associated with the order. They keep track of goods with Scanco Warehouse tools, another ad-on to their ERP.
As a result of having better control of their data, Southern Towing is able to be nimble and maintain their profitability through their challenging months. Greta shares, “We have bad months every year so when times are lean, our new system allows us to have a better handle on it. We have better insight into our costs and know how to manage them and our workflow has improved. We have enough information so we can make good decisions. People see our company, as opposed to our competitors and they can’t believe our staff is as small as it is. But we are able to be very efficient and keep personnel down because of the software tools we have and any process that we can have automated, we invest in it.”
About working with Blytheco, Greta says, “I think we’ve been really lucky with the people I’ve worked with at Blytheco, like Kelly Rayburn and our Sage 100 Consultant John Stoffa. They are really good and what they do. We know that whenever we purchase different tools, we’ll have great support. Whenever we have a problem, the customer service is always great. So we are very grateful to have the support of a partner who is looking out for our business’ best interests.”
Says Kelly Rayburn: “Greta is a wonderful person to work with through and through. She’s very pleasant, smart and direct. She’s one of those people that makes coming to work seem easy. Gerta understands the value in automation and investing in solutions to improve her company’s workflows. Southern Towing has really seen great returns on their investment with the work we’ve done together so far. I look forward to many more years of a wonderful working relationship!”
