What is Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)?
Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is the computer to computer exchange of routine business information in a standard format. EDI transaction sets eliminate the need to re-enter critical data in commercial pay systems and accounting systems. Blytheco offers 3 different EDI software packages for Sage MAS 90 or Sage MAS 200 to enable Electronic Data Interchange, RedTail, eBridge and TrueCommerce.

EDI may be most commonly understood as the replacement

of paper-based purchase orders with electronic equivalents. It is actually much broader in its application than the procurement process, and its impacts are far greater than mere automation. EDI offers the prospect of easy and cheap communication of structured information throughout the corporate community, and is capable of facilitating much closer integration among hitherto remote organisations.

When you use EDI, it's not necessary for you and your trading partner to have identical document processing systems. When your trading partner sends a document, the EDI translation software converts the proprietary format into an agreedupon standard. When you receive the document, your EDI translation software automatically changes the standard format into the proprietary format of your document processing software.

EDI saves unneccessary re-capture of data. This leads to faster transfer of data, far fewer
errors, less time wasted on exception-handling, and hence a more streamlined business process. Benefits can be achieved in such areas as inventory management, transport and distribution, administration and cash management. EDI offers the prospect of easy and cheap communication of structured information throughout the business community, and between government agencies and their suppliers and clients.
 
Benefits to Large Companies
Large companies have collectively invested billions to automate their business processing and to integrate it as part of their enterprise resource planning systems. Over the last decade, much of their commerce-related transactions are leveraged by EDI. Use of EDI reduces manual handling costs by several orders of magnitude, while reducing errors, speeding the exchange of transactions, and improving cash flow.

More recently large companies have begun to use newer internet –based protocols to conduct EDI, as well as to provide simpler, web-based alternatives to their suppliers.

More and more the ability to trade electronically is a condition for doing business with large companies. The smaller company's ability to meet the electronic trading requirements of its large customers not only gives the small company a significant strategic advantage over its competitors, but helps the small trading partner attain preferred supplier status with its existing customers.
