Spotlight On Sage MAS 500: The Light Manufacturing And Advanced Kitting Module

It’s quite common for distributors to assemble, group, package, repackage, modify, label, or customize the products they sell. While few of these companies would call themselves manufacturers, the labor and materials that go into to their final products are real and should be accounted for. An efficient way for companies using Sage MAS 500 ERP to manage these value-added activities is by using the Light Manufacturing and Advanced Kitting module. This powerful and intuitive tool can help you arrive at more accurate costs for the products you distribute.

Simplified Workflow
The manufacturing workflow doesn’t have to be filled with work orders and complex routing. The Light Manufacturing and Advanced Kitting module simplifies the workflow by taking work orders out of the workflow. You simply use the Production Entry screen to record the completion of finished goods after the fact and it uses the backflush costing features to automatically issue the labor time, material quantities, or outside transactions used.

This single point of entry eliminates dozens of potential labor and production transactions by automatically issuing material quantities, outside process transactions, overhead costs, and labor time to finished goods. When a particular production run is out of the ordinary, you’re free to adjust standard quantities and record scrap amounts to reflect actual usage.

Advanced Kit Handling
You may already be utilizing the Inventory Management module that provides the ability to create preassembled kits that are ordered from stock or to customize kits that are built to order. The Light Manufacturing and Advanced Kitting module takes this a step further by providing the ability to incorporate labor costs into the kitting process and to create routings within the components. Your kits may be as simple as grouping two or three items together in a box or as complex as multi-level assemblies. Kits may be included as component items in other kits, and each kit can be as many as 30 levels deep. You’re able to identify the serial or lot numbers of component items used in your assembly, as well as distribute the finished goods quantities to different lot or serial numbers.

Accounting For Labor
Using the Light Manufacturing and Advanced Kitting module, you can add labor and overhead as part of the kitting process. This dramatically improves product costing, subsequent pricing, and the overall kitting procedure. You won’t have to spend time recording individual labor transactions; you can backflush labor and overhead costs at standard rates as you perform production entry for the finished goods.

The Light Manufacturing and Advanced Kitting module has robust functionality including:

• Revision dates and codes to identify unique routings and bills of material.
• Work Orders are created behind the scenes, providing important work order history should you someday upgrade to the Advanced Manufacturing module.
